Spanish Government backs development of MIRIAD Global’s LynksOS software with €1.8 million
Selected by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities under its Public-Private Collaboration Projects (CPP) programme, LynksOS has been conceived as an international benchmark in operating systems that govern autonomous vehicles, robotic systems and critical subsystems
Madrid, 22 September 2026. – Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has awarded €1,763,050.32 in public funding for the development of LynksOS, the real-time mission operating system designed in Spain by defence industrial group MIRIAD Global to govern the operation of autonomous vehicles, robotic systems and critical subsystems.
LynksOS is the critical software layer on which the full stack of the Lynks suite runs. Lynks is the set of hardware, software, sensor and artificial intelligence systems integrated into every node of MIRIAD’s autonomous platforms (land, air and naval).
LynksOS also hosts LynksC2, the command and control software that connects each platform to MIRIAD’s command post and, where the deployment requires it, to the end user’s own command and control system.
Designed by the MIRIAD Engineering division, LynksOS has been selected by the State Research Agency (AEI), a body attached to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, under the Public-Private Collaboration Projects (CPP) call.
For MIRIAD Global, the award is an institutional endorsement of its research and innovation work. It also recognises the group’s determination to advance strategic autonomy by producing critical defence technology capabilities in Spain.
International benchmark and compatibility
“LynksOS has been conceived to become the benchmark autonomy platform worldwide. We are already working with customers with a view to integrating it into major autonomous vehicle programmes in Europe and the Middle East,” says José Molins, Managing Director of MIRIAD Engineering.
LynksOS is built on a microkernel software architecture that explicitly separates deterministic real-time control, which is critical to mission safety, from an isolated artificial intelligence domain managed by the kernel itself. The kernel allocates computing resources (CPU, GPU, NPU, memory and bandwidth) among perception, planning and decision support at any given moment. AI is therefore no longer an add-on layer and becomes part of the operating system itself, with its resources managed in the same way as those of any critical task.
This architecture allows each platform to operate autonomously if it loses its link with command and control, and to resynchronise its status incrementally once communication is restored. It also allows the platform to degrade its functionality in a controlled way when failures occur, without compromising the mission as a whole. In addition, the technology is vehicle-agnostic, which makes it compatible with platforms and vehicles from other manufacturers.
MIRIAD Engineering will add LynksOS to its range of critical subsystems. It will offer the system to vehicle manufacturers, integrators and industry players that need to build autonomy, distributed control, resilient navigation and onboard artificial intelligence capabilities into their own or third-party systems. LynksOS will be suitable for unmanned ground vehicles, aerial and naval drones, industrial robots and other autonomous platforms.
Development in Málaga
MIRIAD Global will lead the development of the LynksOS architecture, as well as its industrial integration and commercialisation, from the software laboratory set up by its Engineering division in Málaga. System architecture, kernel development, the integration of artificial intelligence capabilities and validation tools will all be centralised there.
Funditec is taking part in the project as a collaborating technology centre in several lines of applied research. These include edge artificial intelligence, multimodal perception, navigation in GNSS-denied environments and technology validation.
MIRIAD Global will integrate its own variant of LynksOS into its TAURUS, ARIES and RHINOS families of 6×6 autonomous ground vehicles.
About MIRIAD Global
MIRIAD Global is a Spanish defence industrial group specialising in unmanned systems, advanced subsystems, electronics and industrial integration, with Funditec among its shareholders. The group has its own technology and industrial capabilities in design, engineering, software, manufacturing and integration. It applies them to the development of complete systems and to the supply of critical subsystems and electronics to third parties in national and European defence programmes. With facilities in Madrid, Málaga, Getafe and San Fernando de Henares, and industrial agreements in Catalonia and the Basque Country, its activity focuses on land, air and naval autonomous platforms. It also covers onboard artificial intelligence, mission computers, control electronics and other mission-critical systems. Its industrial model is based on the progressive integration of complementary production and technology capabilities. The aim is to strengthen an industrial and technological base in Spain with a real capacity to deliver major defence programmes.
